Three things...

Suck: Cleaners went into the office today, didn't have alarm code and left.

More suck: Alarm company didn't know how to page building security. Apparently hadn't realised that you can't leave a voicemail on a numeric pager. Decided to go into office myself because it's better to spend $17 on a cab than $250 on a false alarm from the police.

Kinda cool: When I brought the security guard up to do the inspection with me, he was like: "Dude? Is this Canonical and Ubuntu like the Linux Distribution?"

Amazing how that can make going into work on a Saturday significantly less suck. =)

That is cool...

What was the rest of the conversation like?

Sorry, in retrospect that question seemed a little odd.

What I mean to ask is whether you learnt how the security guard came to know about Ubuntu? A cousin or friend, or the company has mandatory training due to an upcoming switch to Ubuntu :), etc. - I'm curious as to how much mindshare Ubuntu and Linux in general has with 'Average Joe' types.

=)

Mostly the rest of the conversation centred around the alarm system we have at the office. But in general, it seems he's a casual linux user, had got a livecd somehow (I didn't ask how) and used it occasionally. He doesn't considering himself a strong user of Linux at all.

But who knows, maybe we've just changed that!

It's always either security guards or service (gas) station attendants.

... Do you hav service station attendants breaking into your office often? =)

Not often. I think the last person to break into the office was me :)

I have had a service station attendant ask me if I knew how to configure their ISDN connection in Fedora Core before.

sorry

It might be my fault, I've handed out quite a large amount of Ubuntu CD's at petrol stations, and even cinemas too :)
