First - I've switched the feed for http://planet.debian.org/ to RSS instead of atom. Atom doesn't work, and apparently never has despite there being a fair number of registered atom feeds.

Second - I'm likely to start blogging comments about religion. I think most people who know me know that I'm a UU and have been now for about half of my life. So this isn't new - I'd avoided posting religious things in my blog before because the software that I was running at home had no method for trivially separating things based on tags. I moved to LJ a while ago, and I think it has this. The question is what's the best way to keep things posted to planets without those entries? Is there some sort of a thing I can setup that says "make a feed for everything that *isn't* tagged religion?" If you have an idea, let me know. Or perhaps people don't care, in which case don't worry about it. =)

(Why doesn't the LJ spellchecker include obvious things like "RSS", "Blogging", and "href"?)

What aspect of Atom doesn't work?

I ask this because a system at work I'm developing is intended to expose Atom feeds, so I'd like to know any potential issues I'll encounter.

Atom works, but I think Planet Debian's Atom parser doesn't.

Atom is lovely. Well spec'd from what I can see and not terribly ambiguous. Just that planet.debian.org's parser doesn't handle atom feeds.

I kept getting complaints that my entries were broken showing up on the page, so I tracked down that I was simply doing something not supported.

I was hoping to be able to get a per-tag feed to give to Planet Debian, but I didn't find such a feature either. Please let me know if you figure it out.

Is there a way you can do that for the "make a feed for $foo tag" case? Not that that would help you, but it would help me. :)

It turns out that it's not possible:

Below is an answer to your support question regarding "How do I mix tags and syndication?"

FAQ REFERENCE: How do I suggest new features or improvements for LiveJournal?
http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=164&view=full

There currently isn't a way to do either of the things you're describing. If you'd like to suggest that this be possible, you can do so by following the instructions in the FAQ referenced above.

I haven't filed the feature request yet, but I'm likely to. I've also head that LJ is Free Software, so it might be possible to just roll up my sleeves and do it myself. Since you can already view by tag, doing syndication by tag is likely just a matter of combining a few things.

A bit of a kludge, but since entries can have multiple tags, you could always have a "nonreligion" tag you apply to everything else.

Or just don't worry about it. If someone can post a 10 paragraph entry on choosing the correct printer (http://scjody.livejournal.com/11531.html), surely insightful posts about religion won't be a problem.
